Maryann Hendriks
Maryann Hendriks translates her love of flowers into a beautifully abstracted rendition of her subject. Her "contemporary" still lifes combine varied textures, a unique brushstroke and a vibrant palette of joyful colours. She lives in Cambridge, Ontario.

Maryann Hendriks was born in 1964, raised in Dorchester, a small rural town of Southwestern Ontario, Canada.
Background and career
Maryann graduated from Fanshawe College in London, Ontario with a Photographic Diploma, and was an Art Major graduate at Bealart. She also worked independently for a long time, and was guided by her mentor, well-known Canadian artist Robert Genn, at the craft of painting Fine Art.
Maryann worked many years as an entrepreneur, always harbouring a desire to paint professionally. In 2005, she saw an opportunity to relocate to the Okanagan area of British Columbia and begin that journey. Progressing through traditional stylized Canadian Landscape painting and experimenting with Abstraction, she now finds her language in a brightly coloured Semi-abstract Still Life genre, a lifelong love of flowers clearly evident. Late 2012 found Maryann in a new home closer to family and friends in Cambridge, Ontario.
Maryann has exhibited with the Federation of Canadian Artists frequently, and has acquired signature member status in 2008. More recently, she has begun exhibiting with the Society of Canadian Artists, and acquired elected member status in 2015.
Work and art
Maryann Hendriks paints bold and stylized floral work in a style that is unique and immediately recognisable. Her mixed media work is characterized by solid design, smooth yet wild textures, flowing compositions, vibrant colours and strong, assured brushwork. The overall effect is a dynamic expression of joy and vitality.
By utilizing acrylic paints and mediums, Maryann has integrated a multilayered technique of thick and thin to prepare her canvas. With a solid layer of texture and colour in place, from bold palette, paint is laid into her subject area with a wide array of strokes, marks and washes. Layers of paint become quite cumulative in some areas, negligible in others. Then, a series of gritty negative coatings cut out subject matter from ground, resulting in an undeniably dominant motif. Finally a high gloss rub application accentuates a large variance in surface sheen.
Over the last few years, Maryann has created her own language which captures her free spirit and boldness. Since the artist states that her work morphs into a little more abstraction in each series she produces, can't wait to see what lies ahead!
