Maya Eventov - A Joyful Journey

Date and place of birth
Maya Eventov was born in 1964 in Leningrad, now known as St. Petersburg, under the former Soviet Union. Today, she and her family reside just outside of Toronto, Ontario.

Background and career
Maya began her formal artistic training in the art schools of Leningrad, but her real artistic education was formed over the countless hours she spent at the magnificent Hermitage Museum as well as many other Leningrad museums, studying the works of great masters. The works of the Post-impressionists, and those of the Russian Avant-Garde especially fascinated Maya. After attending the Leningrad High College of Art and Design, she graduated in 1987 with a master's degree in graphic design. She then began working as an illustrator for children’s books.

Taking advantage of the fall of the Iron Curtain, Maya began to travel and finally immigrated to Canada in the early 1990s. This change in scenery gave her freedom to explore, to create and to break away from the classical way of painting she studied in Russia. “I’m happy person; I enjoy beautiful flowers and landscapes. I am captivated by smells and colours that convey strength of emotion in a happy painting.” Her work is represented in galleries throughout Canada, Great Britain and the United States.

Work and art
Maya Eventov creates uniquely sculpted acrylic canvases depicting landscapes, florals and figures. The result is a powerful expression of colour and warmth that provides an idyllic window of escape to anyone who views it. Her atmospheric forest scenes vibrate with light and colour, and call to mind a stained glass window lit from behind by dazzling sunlight.

Maya's work is characterized by a thick application of acrylic paint using a selection of different sized palette knives. Her distinctive technique of painting and etching her material allows her to build each composition with a mesmerizing vocabulary of textures and shades. In this way, the painting can come to life through the viewer's eye reaction to subtle changes in colour and tone. The result is stunning mosaics of rich, vivid and vibrant colours, sometimes blended, sometimes pure.

Maya's bold, painterly artistic statements are intricately detailed, but when viewed from afar the combination of colours and textures falls into sharp relief, evoking subjects of mystery, peace and joie de vivre.

Maya Eventov is represented by the Au P'tit Bonheur Art Gallery since September 2021.
