Robert Roy, painter

Robert Roy manages to capture the present moment and to transmit it with passion in his street or sports scenes, painted in oil. The freedom of gesture characterizes his work and defines his style, resolutely expressionist.

Robert Roy - Always With Pleasure

Date and place of birth
Robert Roy was born in 1957 in Ste-Perpétue, a small community in the Centre-du-Québec.

Background and career
Born into a family of entrepreneurs, Robert Roy at first worked in his family's general store. However, when his father retired and discovered painting as a hobby, Robert, who was just 18 years old, also became fascinated with painting and colour. As a result, he spent all his free time working on his technique and capturing on canvas all that inspired him. In Ste-Perpétue, he drew and painted his surroundings from all angles, but he was soon ready to discover new horizons. He left his hometown to travel the world, visiting some fifty major cities, including Vancouver, Paris, New York, Malaga, Brussels, Sydney and Honolulu. These trips were to be decisive for his entire artistic approach, forever marking the way he looked at places - his panorama as well as his human fauna - wherever he was.

Robert Roy, painterAfter returning to Quebec, Robert Roy studied art at the University of Quebec in Trois-Rivières (UQTR) and continued to work on developing his technique. A determined artist, he has participated over the years in numerous events and exhibitions. Since 1996, his work has been presented in galleries across Canada.

Work and art
Inspired by people in movement, Robert Roy's paintings are characterized by freedom of movement and a lively expressionist style in which colour and emotion reigns. His desire is to capture the moment in all its complexities by painting what he sees and by generously sharing what he feels with the viewer.

In his street scenes, painted with oils, brushes and spatulas, Robert Roy celebrates his love of the Quebec landscape and its people; hockey in the alley, sugar parties and picnics in the park are all occasions for the artist to take a tender look at Quebec, its people and its traditions.

In fact, Robert Roy’s appreciation for life is felt in all his work, because he likes to paint as he likes to live; that is with great pleasure and joie de vivre.

Robert Roy is represented by the Au P'tit Bonheur Art Gallery since April 2022.
