His date and place of birth
J. Douglas Thompson was born in 1949 in Vancouver, British Columbia and grew up just east of the Rocky Mountains near Calgary, Alberta. During this period, he became aware of the natural beauty of the North around him. The prairie sky and its spectacular storms, in particular, left an indelible mark on the young artist in the making.
His education, his career
He spent his teenage and university years in the Toronto area, where he studied commercial art. Subsequently, he worked for more than forty years in the field of advertising as a graphic designer and account manager, then as the owner of his own agency.
He has traveled to over sixty-five countries. He traveled much of North and Central America, the Amazon rainforest and the Galapagos Islands. He loved the high ranges of the Andes, Alps, Pyrenees and Norwegian fjords. These adventures made him aware of the great diversity of the natural world. More recently, his travels have taken him to Nepal and North Bengal, India, and once again to the Amazon rainforest, this time to Peru and Venezuela.
For thirteen years he lived and worked in Europe and South America in non-governmental organizations.

His work, his art
Doug paints in acrylic on canvas, depicting various atmospheres caused by the interaction of light with water in all its forms. Whether it's tall cumulus clouds, fog rising over a lake in the early morning, waterfalls, breaking waves or many other natural phenomena, it is always with emotion that he capture these wonders of nature. His paintings are also personal, metaphorical expressions, where light symbolizes hope, in juxtaposition with the challenges of life.
Thompson was influenced by JMW Turner, the great British painter of light, and by American painter Eric Sloane, who was a true pioneer of sky painting and who coined the term "Skyscapes".
"The purpose and role of the artist is to educate others, so that they stop and consider what might have gone unnoticed," Thompson insists. "There is only one Creator...the painter only recreates."
J. Douglas Thompson has been represented by the Au P'tit Bonheur Art Gallery since December 2021, exclusively for Quebec.
