Jerzy Werbel - Landscapes of freedom
Date and place of birth
Jerzy Werbel was born in Szczecin, Poland, in 1955. He immigrated to Canada in 1990 and now lives in Windsor, Ontario.

Background and career
Jerzy Werbel attended the University of Art and Education in Poland, where he developed his skills in the traditional medium of painting. After establishing his career in Polland, he decided it was time for a change, and made the momentous decision to re-settle with his young family in Germany. Eventually he came to Canada and moved permanently to southwestern Ontario. There, he established his new atelier and began evolving his unique perspective of his newly reached homeland.

Over the next 20 years, the artist travelled across Canada, indulging in the lush visual landscapes of freedom, which have been a prominent inspiration for his work. He continues to travel extensively, documenting his emotional response to the land he now calls his own. His work has been exhibited across Canada and internationally.

Work and art
Much of Werbel's work is heavily influenced by Canada's Group of Seven -his pictures of windswept pines on lakeside rock formations are reminiscent of Group of Seven Tom Thompson-, but also by his passion for the European expressionists and the great masters Kandinsky, Van Gogh and Dali.

“ At first glance our land is a seemingly peaceful utopia. Its violent nature of constant evolution is so subtle to the eye, it is often overlooked. Our land is a burial ground and a place of birth. I admire the static elusion our landscape seems to presents, hence obsessively continuing to document its latest installation. "

Jerzy Werbel is represented by the Au P'tit Bonheur Art Gallery since May 2017.
