Pei Yang, painter

Pei Yang was born in Yangzhou, China, in 1971. He now lives in Montreal, where he pursues his artistic career. In his work at the limit of abstraction, he expresses himself with complexity and in a very personal way. His free treatment of floral themes is distinctive, while evoking the approach of Impressionist painters.

Pei Yang - Intensity and sweetness
His date and place of birth
Pei Yang was born in Yangzhou, China, in 1971. He now lives in Montreal, where he pursues his artistic career.

His education, his career
Pei Yang was introduced to the art in high school. From then on, he won various prizes and competitions for his artistic prowess. After obtaining a scholarship, he immigrated to Canada in 1994 and chose to major in fine arts at the Ottawa School of Art and Animation, then part of Algonquin College in Ottawa, in Ontario.

Yang first made his mark in animated film, collaborating on films from Columbia Studios and Dreamworks Studios. In both cases, he helps design the visual presentation of the film, notably as artistic director for the backgrounds. One of his productions, the television series Sagwa, The Chinese Siamese Cat, even won an Emmy Award in 2002, precisely for this aspect of the production. He also worked for The Greatest Thing, Heavy Metal and several other important productions in this field.

In parallel with this professional activity, painting gradually takes up more space. Indeed, if Pei Yang has exhibited his works since 1989 in various galleries, government buildings and international film festivals, both in China and Canada, he presented his first solo exhibition, in Ottawa, in 1996. From 1997 to 1999, he also sits on the board of directors of the Chinese Canadian Arts Council of Canada, and he collaborates in several exhibitions organized by this center. In 1999 and 2000, he worked as an assistant in the studio of Ontario painter Philip Craig. The latter, whose spirit will influence Yang, will play an important role in Pei Yang's career path.

His work, his art
Over the years, Pei painted several themes. Interior scenes, landscapes and flowers, first in a figurative way, then more and more semi-abstract, until the limit of abstraction. His current work, in oil, gives the artist the opportunity to express himself with complexity and in a very personal way. The touch is free in the treatment of floral themes and is not without evoking -despite its obvious differences- that of the Impressionist painters.

Pei Yang has been represented by the Au P'tit Bonheur Art Gallery since September 2020.
